LEE, John Charles

1956 - 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, John Charles Lee (known to some as Jeff), on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the age of 62 in Ottawa, Ontario. John was born on September 30, 1956 in Galt, Ontario. He will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone, his kindness to others, his positive and upbeat attitude, his comical entertaining, exciting magic shows, his love of coaching basketball and his love for the gospel of Jesus Christ. He worked for many years in sales but his favourite job was coaching. He coached several basketball teams including, Georgian College Men’s & Women’s Varsity teams. Because of his compounding medical issues resulting from a house explosion accident in 1974, he eventually had to go on permanent disability. Most recently he continued his love for learning as a student at the Adult High School of Ottawa, where he volunteered daily with the breakfast club. John is survived by his three children, Emily (Greg) McAteer, Ben (Katarina), Lindsay (Garreth) Haberstock, and their mother Cindy Lee. He is survived by his six grandchildren Rhys, Declan, Felix, Garrett, Marius, and Rozalia. He is also survived by his parents Jeff & Sheila Lee, and his nine siblings, Ellen Stortini, Cathy (George) Piper, Jamie, Lori (Joe) Callahan, Mairi Gieni, Keran, Joel (Sarah), Jeremy (Kelly Keating), Josh, and by all of his nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Co-operative of Ottawa at 419 St. Laurent Blvd. The funeral service for John will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 1017 Prince of Wales Drive, in Ottawa, with a reception to follow the service. Those who wish to send flowers may send them to the Funeral Co-operative of Ottawa at 419 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa, ON, K1K 2Z8. John will be laid to rest in the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario.

John Lee

When I began to investigate the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John was one of my missionaries. He confirmed me a member of the achurch at that time. He was fun to be with and stayed a friend in those early years of membership. After his mission, John boarded with my husband and me. We had moved into my grandfather’s house after he passed away. I still had some old suits that belonged to my grandfather in the closet in John’s room after he moved in so I cleared them out, and dropped them in the Goodwill donation box. When John came home that night, he asked me where I had put HIS suit! Some kind souls had given him a good used suit and I had given it away! I called Goodwill they assured me it would have already been picked up so John and I went downtown to their warehouse to look for it! The first thing we encountered was a literal mountain of clothes! It was a staggering sight! The workers assured us, a good suit would have been sorted right away. So, we headed to the suit room. There must have been hundreds and hundreds of suits in a room the size of a double gym! We just looked at each other and shook our heads. John, bless him, walked away without his suit that day and let me off the hook (pun intended) for giving his away.

When we moved a few months later, John came with us. He was there one Saturday morning when a terrible smell pervaded the house. I roused everyone and called the fire department. I was sure the house would catch on fire or blow up and we’d only lived there two weeks! It turned out to be ammonia used as a coolant in an old fridge kindly left behind for us in the basement by the previous owners! John took it all in stride with good humour. It was an interesting way to meet our neighbours!

Each of us will have our own unique memories of John. I was so pleased to read about his family, children and grandchildren and all of the work he did and things he accomplished along with his spirit of volunteering.

My thoughts are with all of you at this time. I was glad to know this young man whose willingness to serve a
Mission was part of his gift to me and in turn, my own family.

I recall so vividly the wonderful experiences John and I had as home teaching companions for several years in Barrie ON. I got to know him as a friend and a brother. Yes, he truly had a big heart and the courage to endure the challenging trials and disappointments of life with humour and positivity.
