Carr, Muriel Joyce

CARR, Muriel Joyce

1924 - 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Muriel Carr. Muriel died peacefully and fiercely independent at her retirement home on May 20, 2023. She is dearly missed by her daughters, Valerie Miller and Sandra Carr, her sons, Philip and Dennis Carr, numerous grandchildren, and great grandkids.

Muriel Joyce Woodhurst was born in Brandon Manitoba on August 18, 1924. During the Depression, at the age of 12, Muriel and her family loaded their belongings onto an old truck and travelled across the prairies to Vancouver.

Active in the Salvation Army church and Cub Scouts, Muriel met her future husband George Carr, a ship’s radio officer, at church camp. Shortly after marrying in 1948 the young couple moved to Estevan Point on Vancouver Island, Victoria B.C., Athabasca, Alberta and finally, in 1960, to Ottawa, Ontario.

After George retired from the federal public service, they traveled the world for ten years on medical support ships, freighters and scientific research ships.  Being adventurous, she was always open to attending plays and musical performances, travelling and trying new cuisines.

When her travelling days were over, Muriel continued to enjoy her large extended family and hosted many a large gathering in her home. She enjoyed her walking club, baking, knitting, church groups and her choir.

Muriel was loving to all she met, social, active in her church and a loyal friend. She created and nourished friendships well into her ninety-ninth year.

Many thanks to all the friends and caregivers who supported Muriel in her later years. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Muriel’s honour to the Salvation Army Ottawa Citadel, 1350 Walkley Rd, Ottawa
