JONES, Barry

1955 - 2023

Barry Jones

January 27th, 1955 – March 19th, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barry Jones, aged 68, on March 19th at the Ottawa Hospital.

For more than 25 years, Barry was the true love and best friend of his wife Françoise Gagnon and the beloved father of Catherine and Thomas, whom he leaves behind inconsolable. He also leaves behind his family in the United Kingdom: his brothers Ian (Daphne) and Stephen (Pauline), his sisters Sandra Bellis and Susan Edwards (David), as well as his nephews and nieces, Victoria, Adam, Alex, Daniel, Christopher, Peter and Kayleigh. He was the son of the late Ethel Sharman and Sydney Jones.

In addition, he was adored by his Canadian family: his mother-in-law Thérèse Lévesque (late Camilien Gagnon), his brother-in-law Robert, his sister-in-law Sophie (Vincent) and his nephews and nieces, Nicolas, Jeanne and Clara. He also leaves behind many colleagues and friends in Canada, Bermuda and the United Kingdom. His cat, Everest, will deeply miss him.

Barry was a senior policy advisor at Health Canada, previously pursuing a career as a community pharmacist in the United Kingdom and Bermuda. He loved his work as he cared passionately about the health of Canadians. He was educated in London.

A man of great quality and many talents, Barry was much appreciated by all who knew him. His insatiable curiosity allowed him to develop many passions that he shared without limits with his loved ones. An artist in his time, he loved playing electric guitar and painting with oil. Gourmet and epicurean, he had developed his talents as a gastronome as well as a vast knowledge of the world of wines. From an early age, Barry played many sports, including soccer, golf and running. More recently, the acquisition of a cottage in Gracefield in the Gatineau Hills had given rise to a new hobby, carpentry. His unique and typically British sense of humour brought him to the centre of countless circles of laughter with his family and friends.

The family will receive condolences and expressions of sympathy between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5th at the Allsaints Event Space, whose entrance is located at 317 Chapel Street (corner of Laurier Street) in Ottawa. A memorial service and reception will follow.

Malgré ne pas vous avoir vu depuis très longtemps, je restais au courant de votre belle famille par Sophie. Je sais combien Barry était un "bon gars". On pense à vous dans ces moments difficiles. Nos sincères condoléances.

Sincere condolences on the loss of Barry . Our paths only crossed through UK family in our very younger days . Barry’s father and my mother were siblings. Barry worked with me for a very short time in a laboratory during his University breaks , while studying for his Pharmacy degree
A lovely man taken far too soon

We have very fond memories of the happy times we shared over many years with our good friend, Barry. We are able to get some comfort from remembering his passion for life and his infectious sense of humour and fun but, like many, we will miss his friendship and good company. From the UK, we send our deepest sympathy and share your sorrow at this very sad time. Our thoughts are with you all.

Just thinking about Barry brings a smile to my face. He was larger than life, had a smile that lit up the room and a sense of humour that had made me in hysterics all the time. His love for his family and friends shone out of him and it's hard to imagine a world without him. Sending so much love to you all x

My deepest sympathy to you and your children as you navigate this most painful loss. You will be constantly in my heart through these very difficult days. Your husband lives on through your children and also the ways you experienced the world together and the things that were important to him. He will always be with you though the distance will seem unbearable at first. Let others hold you up.

Francoise, Catherine and Thomas,

I am so sorry for your loss. Barry was always larger than life, always telling a tale ... and yes, that included his fish tales. It's hard to imagine that a small dispensary contained his energy back in Bermuda in the 90s. I'm thankful that fate led my family to Ottawa where we had the opportunity to you all for at least a short while.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers,
Cheryl, David, Coral and Cedar

Franchise & Family

I have known Barry since we were both 5, we lived close to each other and spent most of our time playing football and arguing about the football teams we supported (Everton for Barry and Man United for me).
We had a great childhood and we still kept in touch and when we met we would reminisce about our younger days.
A sad loss of a great friend.

Barry’s family home and abroad.

On behalf of my mum Barry’s aunty Gwen (87), myself Garry and my family Yvonne, Marcus and Seren. So sorry to hear of your loss, our thoughts are with you.
Mum has many memories of Barry, she used to take him to school on her way to work when he was little. He was certainly her favourite. He was Page boy at her wedding.
I remember playing football (soccer) with him for Mold Alex FC, he was much better than me, I looked up to him, and it’s obvious that many others also did.
Love to all G.

I can't imagine how you must be feeling, I'm just so sorry.

Barry and I go back almost 50 years, he's one of the very few people in my life who left me crying tears of laughter. What a character, what a personality, what a unique sense of humour! The way his mind worked, quirkiness brought into any situation.

As 20 year olds holidaying in France, "Poulet Roti" in restaurants became "Pull it rotten".
"Dix Francs" became "Dick's Francs". And he considered that because he looked more like Paul McCartney than did Paul McCartney, every attractive girl around was "giving him the eye" - which they well might have been, such was his charisma.

I will never forget him.

Barry was amazing, he was always laughing and made coming into the office so much fun we had some great laughs over the years. RIP my friend... time to score some goals with Pele.

My deepest condolences to Barry's family. He was larger than life, so it's hard to imagine him not being here.

Barry always had a funny story or joke to share, and was a bright light whenever one was needed. For me, the telltale sign of having spent any amount of time with Barry was walking away with a sore stomach from laughing until I cried!

Barry's zest for life enabled him to live multiple lifetimes in one and I hope the many memories he leaves behind provide some comfort during this difficult time.
