BASTIAN, Carl Hendrik

1939 - 2022

Carl Hendrik Bastian

MARCH 18, 1939 – MAY 30, 2022

Carl Hendrik Bastian was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands to Willem and Neelte Bastian (nee Weltje) on March 18, 1939. He had two older sisters (Janie and Corrie) and a younger brother (Willem[Bill]). He received all of his education in The Netherlands before emigrating to Canada with his parents in July 1957.

A year before leaving for Canada, Carl met Margo and very quickly began pursuing a relationship with her. They shared a long distance relationship for just over a year before Carl got back on the boat to The Netherlands in October 1958 to be with his Margo whom he married on May 28, 1959. Six weeks later they headed back to Quebec, Canada together.

Carl was able to quickly find a job as a machinist (and later a foreman) at Millmont Fiber Boards where he worked for 10 years. He then started working at Air Canada on Boxing Day in 1967 where he worked until his retirement in 2001.

Carl and Margo’s four children Matthew (‘62), Lia (‘64), Manja (‘68), Joanne (‘69), were all born on the Island of Montreal and lived there until they moved as a family to Vaudreuil, Quebec, south-west of Montreal, in 1973. It was in Vaudreuil that the couple watched their children grow up, move into their careers, meet their spouses, and start their own families.

In 2008 Carl and Margo moved to Anderson Park Community in Carlsbad Springs, Ontario where they became an integral part of a community that they enjoyed very much. Carl quickly became a handyman of the community and volunteered extensively wherever he was needed.

Both in Quebec and Ontario, Carl and Margo became very involved in the local Christian Reformed Church. Besides making and maintaining many friendships, the couple always had an open door for any visitors at the church that may not have had anywhere else to go. Carl also used his many gifts and talents to help out in church maintenance as well as setting up countless bazaars in both locations.

Carl was a devoted husband, family man, and friend. His christian faith was an integral part of who he was and what he did. He was an encourager and a man of many interests. He always had a smile and a kind word for whoever crossed his path. His 63 years of marriage to Margo is and will always be a legacy to his family. One of his greatest joys was to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is his gentle spirit and joy of life that will be missed by so many in many parts of the world.

Carl will be missed and always loved by:

Matthew and Judy, Margo and families

Our heartfelt condolences to all of you. It was both a privilege and a joy to have known Carl and spent time with both he and Margo at your welcoming family gatherings where we ( my husband Kerry and I ) were made to feel like members of this great family. He was such a wonderful person, a kind thoughtful, gentle soul .

The Bastian Family

Mom and I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the entire family.

Joanne and I had discussed earlier this year, about how nice it would be to visit, Mr. and Mrs. Bastian, during my mom’s June trip to Quebec. It had been at least 15 years since we had last visited their home on White Street in Vaudreuil.

I will always remember, Mr. Bastian as a kind and gentle man. He was always doing something around the house. Other than at mealtime, I don’t think I ever saw him sit down or rest.

I hope that there are gardens in heaven, for him to finally sit it and enjoy. Although, it will probably be more likely that he’ll be volunteering to tend to them.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Bastian

Please accept my deepest condolence to you and your family. Carl was a beautiful, kind and special person, beloved by many and a good friend of Doug's. They shared a unique friendship born of shared interests, respect for each other and others, and a love of the community in which they lived. Carl was very good to Doug during his last months both in visiting him and helping us. He left a wonderful impression on many and will be deeply missed.

I remember many times from the early Montreal years when our families would get together...whether for a church service ...camping trips....New Year's Eve parties...swimming in your backyard in Vaudreille...and even in Miami where your family visited ours....all so special! I remember Mr Bastian as a humble man who was always smiling. May the Lord grant you all His comfort and peace as you say "goodbye for now". We look forward to a wonderful heavenly reunion...
