LANKESTER, Danuta

1943 - 2022

Lankester, Danuta (Feb 3rd, 1943 - Feb 24th, 2022)

It is with great sadness that the family of Danuta (Danka) Lankester announce her passing. Danka died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 24th, 2022 at the age of 79. Much loved wife of John. Proud mother of Katherine (deceased) (Kevin), Rich (Sally), Hugh (Deanna), Chris (Jonafe), and Dave (Kirsten). Loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Big sister to Gin, Caro, Tess, Rich (Gillian), Tim (Denise), Etienne (Jan), and Anni.

Danka, the daughter of a Polish naval officer, was born in England and lived in several exotic locales across Europe as a child. Danka then moved on to Teacher’s College where she met John. After getting married in Paris in 1965, they welcomed their daughter Kate in 1966 and then embarked on the adventure of their lives sailing across the ocean with a 6-week-old infant. Once in Canada they had stops in Montreal, Raymond (AB), Vernon/Lumby (BC), Victoria, Halifax/Dartmouth, Smithers (BC) and finally Ottawa. Along the way Danka worked as a substitute teacher in between extended bouts as a stay-at-home mum. Despite the somewhat nomadic lifestyle, Danka and John formed many long-lasting relationships with great friends that Danka continued to nurture to her final days.

Danka was ever a cheerful, poised and graceful presence who was the unshakeable cornerstone for her family. Diagnosed with MS in 1988, she maintained her cheery and positive outlook even as the decline eventually forced her into a wheelchair. A remarkable and devout woman with a fantastic sense of humour, a real friend and an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be sorely missed but we know she will have a cup of tea or a glass of port ready for us when we meet again.

The family would like to thank the caregivers from Perley Health that supported Danka through her extended battle with MS. The family would also like to thank the amazing staff at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital (Neurosciences Acute Care Unit and ICU) who cared for Danka in her final days.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1758 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa on Saturday, April 2nd, 2022 at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the MS Society of Canada would be appreciated.
