MILMAN QC, David Harry

1937 - 2022

David Harry Milman QC

Beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away after a lengthy illness in Ottawa on January 9, 2022. His good humour, negotiating skills, and enthusiasm as a travelling companion and life partner made his life together with Valerie Burton a joy.

David was a solicitor for several real estate and condominium developers and condominium corporations in Toronto from 1962 to 1988. He was a licensed real estate salesperson from 1995 to 2000. He moved to Ottawa during his retirement where he volunteered at a branch of the Ottawa Food Bank from 2007 to 2010 and at the YMCA/YWCA National Capital Region on Argyle Avenue from 2008 to 2020. His accomplishments included: serving as an instructor in real estate law and the bar admissions course at Osgoode Hall; Chair of the Condominium Committee of Ontario Real Estate Branch of the Canadian Bar Association from 1962 to 1975; and working with government solicitors in drafting the first Ontario Condominium Act. He created a muffin company in France and generated a market for a product that was not well known there at that time, culminating with sales to the Groupe Accor and Fauchon, Paris. After moving to Ottawa, he also organized grocery stores and Byward Market vendors to donate fruit and vegetables to supplement the Food Bank’s efforts for clients of the Good Neighbour’s House and picked up and helped to distribute food.

Special thanks to Drs. Jeejeebhoy (Toronto) and Akbari (Ottawa) for their special care and compassion.

He is very much missed by his wife Valerie Burton, his children Warren (Andréa), Lisa, Tara (Paul), Dan (Gabby), and grandchildren Eleanor (Ben), Rebecca, Nathaniel, Nicholas, Patrick, and Jack, niece Judy (Leonard), other family members, and friends.

David and Val, Janny and I have fond memories of our 2 trips to France with you, both memorable in their own way. Good learning trips, with Dave and Val pointing out highlights and taking us places just slightly off the beaten path.
Also the great meals served up by Val and eaten with gusto by Dave, an avid trencherman, even with his digestive challenges.
We will miss him, his quiet good humour and positive attitude. And he never talked about those good works he did for the community. A good man. We are proud to have known him.
