It is with deep sadness that we announce that on Sunday, November 8, 2020, Penny Naoma Long, beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at the age of 58.

Penny was born on August 18, 1962 in St. Hubert, Quebec, to Naoma and Clyde Long. She attended Concordia University in Montreal before moving to Ottawa to continue her studies at the University of Ottawa. The city became her adopted home. Known for her kindness and devotion to God, Penny spent her life giving. She fostered children and was very active in her church community and various charity organizations.

Penny practiced martial arts, and in recent years had taken up weaving and ballroom dancing, both of which brought her immense joy. She loved The Beatles, Star Trek, and giraffes. Affectionately known as ‘the dinner fairy,’ one of Penny’s greatest pleasures was spoiling her friends and family with a good meal or a special desert. She had a wonderful sense of humour and a beautiful spirit.

Penny is survived by her mother Naoma (Dan); her siblings, Perry, Cindy (Don), and June; her nephews, Gerry, Wayne (Shyla), and Daniel; her grand-niece Mabli and mother, Brigitte; as well as several cousins and many friends.

A private service will be held on November 21, 2020. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church, 152 Metcalfe Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 1N9.

My deepest sympathies to you. Penny was a great friend and wonderful person. Her enthusiasm for the things she was passionate about, martial arts, dancing, weaving and classical music was infectious. Her hospitality and generosity were things I have appreciated over the years. I will always remember how comfortable it felt to be seated on one of her couches with other members of the bible study she lead and just enjoy the warmth of the friendships she helped to inspire.

Penny had an incredible influence in the lives of many people. I will cherish many many memories of time we spent together. She will be missed by many, including me.

Sadness and pain has touched us all with the sudden departure of Penny. What a loving and giving soul she was. Always thinking of others. She had comforted me in a time that was very difficult for me. She even made me a Prayer Shawl which touched my heart. We both had a love for dance and she would send me videos of some dances she liked. She will be extremely missed by her family and her cousins as well as all those her spirit has touched. I pray for strength and courage for her family and I pray for her soul to rest in peace. She will not be forgotten.

I only got to meet Penny on a few family gatherings, but even on those few gatherings I could see what a special person she was and how much you all meant to each other. The funeral was a wonderful tribute and acknowledgement of her kindness and generosity of spirit.
