MCLACHLAN, Robert Walter (Bob)

1928 - 2021

Robert Walter (Bob) McLachlan

Our Dad passed away peacefully on July 28, 2021 in the company of us five children. The beloved husband and best friend of Marg for 69 years, he was father of Jim (Lisa), Glenda, Michael (Ulrike), Leah (Bill) and Reid (Becky), brother to Dick (Joan), brother-in-law to Marnie Scott, grandpa to Kailey, Mark, Brittany, Cooper, Nikolaus, Brandon, Mikaela, Jonathan, Kristina, Korina, and Talia, and great-grandpa to Miles and Nate. Born and raised in Toronto, he began working at Bell Canada as a lineman, rose quickly into management, and devoted most of his 38 year career to the development of telecommunications in Canada. Ethical integrity was the hallmark of both his professional and personal life. Fostering and nurturing a close and loving family was his lifetime project, which he and Mom pursued with unwavering commitment and wisdom. His great passion was building the cottage, establishing it as the hub of family life, and creating an enduring legacy for us and our children. As a father and grandfather he was a tremendous reservoir of knowledge and experience, all of which he willingly shared but did not impose. We are inspired by the courage and energy that he mustered during his last years as he continued to develop and grow while enriching the lives of those around him with his warmth and humour. His passing embodied the independence, dignity and thoughtfulness that characterized his life. Sail off to rejoin your lovey Dad.

A private celebration of Dad’s life will be held in Ottawa on September 4.

We are very grateful to Sarah Anne, Madison, Jen and the other staff at the ICU of the Kingston General Hospital for their compassionate and thoughtful care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Reid & Becky

We are thinking of you these days as you bid adieu to your Dad. His smiling face in the photo above says it all: a man of compassion and warmth. It is sad that your parents have both passed away, but weren't you fortunate they were yours! The legacy and love he and your Mom have left will remain with you forever. Lives well lived indeed.

Glenda, your siblings and families

A beautiful tribute from a family who revered their father. How lovely and rewarding it must have been for him to pass on surrounded by his children, knowing the success of his ‘lifetime project’. May your many precious memories and deep family bonds provide comfort going forward.

Reid, Becky (and your family, Reid)

Always so hard to lose a beloved parent. I only know your father & family through you, Reid -- and your dedication to wilderness, to adventure -- ethical integrity, laughter and Love of the Wild. Your father helped shape the man you are. And so, I pay tribute to a good man's passing: we are sorry for this tremendous loss, and celebrate the man your father truly was. We send you all comfort.

Such a lovely man and a perfect photo with his warm, engaging and gentle smile. Your parents were a wonderful part of our neighbourhood and I think of them both with great fondness. He will certainly leave a wonderful legacy and an enormous gap in your world.

A huge warm hug,
