MACKENZIE-HOWAT, Theresa Frances (Fran)

1936 - 2023

Theresa Frances (Fran) MacKenzie-Howat, aged 86, passed peacefully into the presence of our Lord on November 23rd with her loving husband Byron Howat, and her stepchildren at her side following a recent massive stroke.

She is predeceased by her parents Sadie and Alex, her 7 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Ann of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Fran was born in the Red Islands region of Cape Breton, NS. She went right from high school to The Congrégation of Notre Dame (CND), a storied educational institution with a rich history tracing its origins to France. There she spent 17 years, which including the period of time when she earned her Bachelors of Science and Bachelors of Education at St. Francis Xavier University. Upon her return to CND, she taught for the remaining time.

Fran was inspired to pursue her Post Grad Education at the University of Ottawa, where she earned an Honors Masters Degree in the field of Education and Counselling. She fell in love with the Ottawa region, and continued to share her skills for another 15 years as a teacher in a variety of Middle and High Schools.

Fran was involved in the choir at the Resurrection of our Lord Church in Ottawa South and assisted Fr. Paul Tennyson with liturgical services. Fran was a spiritual woman who shared God's Love with all those she met.

When she had time to spare she would be making a home cooked meal for her friends whom she adored. Her fun-loving and playful side kept Byron on his toes. They shared a common interest in cheering on their home team favorites, the Ottawa Senators. Nevertheless, Fran always maintained a special place in her heart for Sidney Crosby, a native of her adored Nova Scotia.

She treasured the company of her many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Byron and Fran spent 38 blessed years together and enjoyed many summers in Cape Breton with friends and family.

Celebratory mass will be held at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Parish, 1940 Saunderson Drive in Ottawa, ON  Friday, December 1st at 11:00 am.

Byron Howat and family

Byron, we are saddened to hear of Fran’s passing but at the same time rejoicing that she’s resting peacefully now in Heaven. You and Fran were both so good to my dad, your older brother, Ervin Hallden and my mom Margaret, who have both in Heaven for a number of years.
Fran will be greatly missed, and her wonderful legacy of love and compassion will never be forgotten. For you and your dear family, we pray for God’s peace and strength for you all during this difficult time of loss and mourning. Love from Dan and Bonnie Hallden and family, Saskatoon, SK.
