CREERY, Tim
With deep sadness we announce the passing of Tim Creery on October 20, 2017 in Ottawa, surrounded by family and friends.
Tim was born in Victoria, B.C. on December 31, 1928, the younger son of Rear Admiral Wallace Creery and his wife Monica. He graduated from the Royal Canadian Naval College but pursued a career in journalism, equipped with a BA from McGill. He was fired from his first newspaper job by Ken Thomson - seemingly for organizing a union - but this only encouraged him. By the late 1950s, he was Parliamentary Correspondent at the Montreal Star’s Ottawa Bureau. He married fellow reporter and National Press Gallery member Carolyn Willett, who joined him in an adventurous life. Tim covered the civil rights movement from Washington and the rise of Quebec nationalism from Quebec City before arriving in Paris in the midst of the 1968 student riots. From there he reported on five tumultuous years of cold war and decolonization in Europe and Africa. He returned to Canada in 1973. As Editorial Page Editor at the Montreal Gazette and later as founder of independent magazine Report on Confederation, he sought to encourage thoughtful dialogue on national issues. In the early 1980s, Tim was Director of Research for the Royal Commission on Newspapers, where he analyzed the practices of his former employers Thomson Corp. and Southam Inc. He continued writing and editing for many years, spending summers in his wife’s beloved Annapolis Valley.
Tim will be deeply missed by Carolyn, his wife of 59 years, daughters Janet and Monica (Egya Sangmuah), grandsons Ben, Liam and Aggrey, older brother Ray, nieces Pippa and Pam and nephews Tim and Ian, godson Richard Beamish, and his extended family and friends. We thank staff at the Garry Armstrong home for their compassionate care over his last two and a half years.
A memorial will be held at First Unitarian Congregation, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa at 11 a.m. on Monday November 6, 2017. In Tim’s memory, donations to Amnesty International would be appreciated.

C’est avec grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Tim Creery au foyer Garry Armstrong à Ottawa, entouré de famille et d’amis.
Né à Victoria (Colombie Britannique), Tim a poursuivi une carrière en journalisme qui l’a amené à travers le Canada, à Washington DC puis à Paris comme correspondant étranger. De retour au Canada, d’abord comme éditeur de la page éditoriale du Montreal Gazette puis comme fondateur de la revue Report on Confederation, il s’est acharné à promouvoir le dialogue et la réflexion sur des questions de politique nationale. Tim a soulevé de la controverse et c’est fait beaucoup d’amis.
Il a été accompagné par sa femme, Carolyn (née Willett) qu’il a épousée en 1958 quand ils étaient tous deux membres de la Tribune de la presse parlementaire canadienne. Tim sera manqué par sa femme depuis 59 ans, Carolyn, ses enfants Janet et Monica (Egya Sangmuah), ses petits-fils Ben, Liam et Aggrey, son frère Ray et ses enfants Pippa et Ian, son beaux-frère Bill et ses enfants Tim et Pam, son filleul Richard, tous les autres membres de sa famille et ses amis. Un service commémoratif prendra place au First Unitarian Church, 30 Cleary Ave, Ottawa, à 11 h le lundi, 6 novembre, 2017.
