James Edward Atkin

June 14, 1936- December 24, 2019

James “Jim” Edward Atkin, 83, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve 2019 at St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa due to complications related to dementia.  He is survived by his best friend and wife, Louise Atkin, their only daughter Sinead Erin Atkin Tsang and husband Andrew Tsang, and two grandchildren, Sophia Rose and Nathaniel Ryan, and step-granddaughter Diane Laura. He is also survived by his brother Denis Atkin (and family) and Candace Aplin (and family). He was predeceased by his parents, George and Doreen Atkin.

Jim was born and raised in North Kildonan (Winnipeg) on June 14, 1936. As a child, he helped out on his uncle’s farm where he learned to drive and operate farm equipment. He developed a love for working with his hands and carried this love with him throughout the rest of his life. After attending Miles Macdonell Collegiate, he apprenticed and worked for Winnipeg Hydro for 37 years, finishing as Superintendent (Meter Department).  He was part-owner of Marvel Construction company, where he enjoyed driving heavy machinery.

He loved cars and boats, and spent many hours working on jobs around the house and cottage. He was always willing to help others with their projects too.

Jim enjoyed travelling with his family on vacations. After 70+ years of living in Winnipeg, Jim moved to Ottawa to be with his grandchildren.  Living in Ottawa, he attended hockey and soccer games and music concerts of his grandchildren.

Jim was a kind, personable man with a great smile and a strong handshake.  He will be missed for his love of life, travel, music, and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. The family would like to thank St. Patrick’s home of Ottawa for the excellent care Jim received at the end of his life.

In lieu of flowers donations to The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County or St. Patrick's Home Ottawa would be greatly appreciated.

Sinead, we send our deepest sympathies on the passing of your father Jim. He was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather. We know it is difficult to say good-bye to such a special person, and we are thinking of you at this time. We do know that he has left many wonderful memories and we will always remember seeing him at birthdays, at church and at the YMCA. He always had a warm smile and was always nice to chat with. Of course, these wonderful qualities live on in his amazing family! Big hugs from all of us and please let us know if you need anything.

Your husband and father was a gentleman and an old soul. What was evident to anyone who met him was that Jim adored his family.

The Lord has prepared a special place in heaven for him.

Please accept our condolences.

Louise

I met Louise briefly when I was 24 years of age in Ireland.I then moved to Winnipeg for a couple of years where I was so lucky as Louise became my friend and as a huge bonus that meant I also had Jim as a friend.
I will always remember Jim for his big smile, his love of life, his stories, his kindness to me, his unstinting love for Louise and Sinead and the family.
I am thinking of you all Louise and love you all.May Jim Rest In Peace

Louise and Erin

Jim and I Became friends when we met with other friends for coffee or a drink.
Jim and I became better friend when he married Louise who was an Irish girl and became best friends with my wife who was also Irish. We all became part of the Irish community in Winnipeg and visited the Irish Club on Erin St. I have not seen Jim or Louise or Erin for many years since Sadie died. I move out the city to Clear Lake and Jim move to Ottawa.
We enjoyed many Christmas's and Boxing Day celebration together. Sorry to hear of Jims troubles late in life. I was travelling in East Kildonan the other day and was thinking about Jim. He will alway be remember in my heart as a friendly, kind and gentile sole who was always willing to help anyone.
