WIENS, Paul Bernard

1943 - 2020

Wiens, Paul Bernard

1943-2020

Paul Bernard Wiens passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday, November 19, 2020 in his 77th year.

Born in Saskatoon on February 6, 1943, Paul was the son of the late David and Gertrude Wiens (née Janz) and the eldest brother to Viola, Victor and Edith.

After completing his studies at the University of British Columbia, Paul enjoyed a long, fulfilling career as a University Librarian, most recently at Queen’s University, where under his leadership the Stauffer Library was built in 1994. His professional life moved him across the country, with periods at the Universities of Waterloo, Manitoba, Lethbridge, and Saskatchewan.

Paul, with his gregarious personality, cherished any opportunity to gather and would think nothing of traveling great distances to be with family and friends. Paul was known for his gusto for long road trips and his love of hiking, biking and skiing. His Mennonite heritage was always close to his heart.

Paul was a devoted father to Philippa, Marianne, Andrew (d. 2019), Patrick, Michaela and Thomas, and grandfather to Alexandra, Zachary, Clara, Miles, Claire, Sawyer, Charlie and Lyla. He is lovingly remembered by his former spouses Nita Good and Mary Cavanagh, and his cherished partner Margot Montgomery.

A private service in Paul’s memory will be held onSaturday, November 28that 4:30 pm atthe Ottawa Mennonite Church. For those who wish to attend remotely, you may do so at https://www.merge9.ca/paulwiens. A recorded version will be available following the service at the same link. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mennonite Historical Society of British Columbia would be appreciated.

To live such a life, as a father, grandfather, companion and friend is the best we can ask for.
To be so loved is a gift. You are in my thoughts Margot--I wish for Paul Godspeed. Christan

Margot

My deepest sympathies - your loss is one that I can understand.

When the world settles down, hopefully we can get together for lunch or something. It's been quite a while.

Dear Margot,
I am so shocked to learn that Paul has passed away. He was such an enthusiastic skier and seemed so healthy. Blair and I really enjoyed our chats with him during our ski trips with Snowhawks. Our most sincere condolences,

Jeannine and Blair

Dear Margot
Glen and I are so sorry not to be able to be with you this afternoon. We recall with great fondness you and Paul visiting us in Muskoka and had hoped for many more visits. He was a lovely man. Gentle, humerous, engaging and of course, well read! We know you will miss him so much and are sad with you.
I hope the service brings consolation and some comfort to you and all the family who loved him.
Your sincerely
Janet and Glen

Words cannot express how profound your Dad's passing is as I reflect on the many teenage memories of time spent with your family, and visits over the years through good times. I send you all love, and hope you are doing as well as possible. My heartfelt condolences.

It is a blessing to find a kindred spirit and life partner, no matter when that person enters your life. Again, my deepest sympathy, Margot, for this tragic loss. May you be comforted by wonderful and happy memories, including your many travels and adventures together.

So sorry to hear about Paul. While I haven’t been to Snowhawks for awhile , You and Paul were such a part of it. Of course nothing one can say will ease your pain but my thoughts are with your and the family at this very sad time/

Dearest Margot:

Words never come easily at such times. I just wish to offer my sincere condolences for your great loss and say that I am so glad that you and Paul got to know and love each other for so many years. You have many many good years of memories to last the rest of your lifetime which is not the same as having your loved one around but they are good to have, nevertheless and they will always be there for you.
