With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Stephen Goban on October 24, 2017, at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus) surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born on 4th May 1945 at Walsingham-on-Thames, Surrey, England, to Anne (née Kearney) and Frederick Goban. He was educated at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, Kensington, London, the London School of Economics (B.Sc.(Econ.), M.Sc.) and the University of Toronto (M.A.).
As a young man in London, some might be surprised to learn that he was a drummer. In addition, he tried to travel around the world, but only made it to Canada, where he put down roots and spent the remainder of his life. He lived in Toronto and Ottawa, working as a public servant, consultant and published author.
Stephen will be deeply missed by his beloved, Cheryl McGrath, his mother Anne, his children, Stéphane (France Tremblay-Goban) and Chantal (Daniel Charbonneau), as well as Heather Brown (Brandon Brown).
He was the proud grandfather of Véronique, Zachary and Amélie Charbonneau (Chantal), as well as Frédérique Goban (Stéphane); he was also loved dearly by Maeve and Caelen (Heather).
He tried, as he put it, to live his life with some dignity and regard for that of others. And kindness.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Monday, October 30, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement’s Parish at 528, Old St‑Patrick Street in Ottawa.
A reception will follow at The Royal Oak at 1 Beechwood Avenue.
