If you were lucky enough to be a friend of Dave’s, you were a friend for life. Maybe that’s why the bonfires he hosted at the Hay Ranch were so well attended. Teammates, neighbours, cousins, they came from all walks and all chapters of his life to join the Hayman in raising a glass of J.D. “Go big or go home” he would say. That’s how he approached friendship. How did he inspire such loyalty in his friends?  Maybe it was because he would drop everything to help, no matter what he had on the go. There was never any question, or any expectation, in return. If asked to explain, he would say “that’s just who I am.” And that is exactly who he was. Never one to sit on the couch, Dave was always active, always wanted to know how he could help. Fix your car? Paint your house? Pull you out of terrible situations? He did it all without a second thought. He brought the same determination to all his relationships. It started with his mother Marlyn, to whom he was devoted. He was a source of quiet strength for his wife Sarah, an anchor to her life. In an age when parents are always too busy, there was no limit to the time he would spend with his children. He spent countless hours on the ice with his son Chris, and he loved to teach Annabel practical things around the house, how to play a new sport, or ride a bike. Hockey brought many of his closest friends together. Dave was never prouder than when his Hawks won the championship of the St Laurent Adult Hockey League. His most telling accomplishment may have been the trophy that the league awarded him twice: for Dedication and Perseverance. That team came together for him in a big way when he needed it. Tony Mungham, Claude Drouin and so many others helped ensure that he died as he lived, surrounded by friends. What we wouldn’t give to see him once again sitting out in the middle of a thunderstorm, reveling in the great outdoors, or telling his daughter “I’ll see you when I’m looking at you.” All we can do is try to be as loyal to one another as he was to all of us. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday,​ July 20, 2018 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lone Star Texas Grill (the Loft), 1211 Lemieux Street.
