MacKay, Myrtle

MACKAY, Myrtle

1917 - 2019

Myrtle Christine MacKay (nee Miller)

On October 9, at 102.

Loving Mother of Robin MacKay.(Rhondda). Grandma Myrtle to Ian (Rachel), Tim (Janice), David (Lisa) and Blake, and to her great grandchildren Kayla, Jane, Jaren, Tala and Owen. Survived by her sister, Marion Young of Cloyne, and by many nieces and nephews.

Kind, generous, loving. Devoted to others, especially her family.     Thankful for all things.

Myrtle left Eganville in 1940 to work as a government inspector of World War II anti-aircraft guns.   She met and married Tom MacKay in 1946. Tom’s career with the Bank of Canada took the family from coast to coast, before they settled in Ottawa.   Tom died in 2003.

Myrtle learned to swim as an adult, and, having mastered the sport, taught others to swim.   This was a pattern: Myrtle mastered every craft, hobby or pastime she took up:   sewing, knitting, rug-hooking, millinery, cooking, baking.   Grandma’s cookies were legendary.   Many of us wear her knitted socks, sweaters, mitts and hats.

Myrtle loved company, and liked to ask open-ended questions such as “what keeps you busy?”   “Where is your home?” In her last days, Myrtle would say “help me get home.”     May she rest in peace.

Myrtle could not stop thanking the staff and volunteers at Peter D. Clarke care centre, for taking good care of her.   Her family thanks them too.

Funeral service Monday October 14 at 2:00 pm, preceded by visitation at 1:00 pm and followed by a reception, Julian of Norwich Anglican Church Ottawa, Merivale Road at Rossland.

Hi Robin & Rhondda,

Very sorry for the loss of Myrtle. She lived to an amazing age and obviously had a very active life from the obituary. We know mother Eileen had great respect and she and Myrtle had a great association through the rug hookers.

Our sincere condolences,

Barry & Debbie

Myrtle's Family

Our parents and yours were the best of dancing friends for years. Having lost our parents in the past few years, we acknowledge the passing of Myrtle, and what losing one's mom or grandmother or sister can mean for her family. We have sent a tribute to Myrtle by donation to the Community Ministries of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa - clearly a group doing good across our community.
